So You Think You Can Dance Season 5 - Episode 14 - The Top 12

Welcome back to Simple Man Entertainment and your review of last night's So You Think You Can Dance show. Last night the top 12 dancers performed in Episode 14, and wow was it a great show. I must say that this was the best show yet.

Regular judges, Nigel and Mary were on the set, and they were joined by Tyce Diorio, a well known choreographer. Each couple danced twice, so the show was moving fast and the judges definitely had a lot to say. So I'll try to cover it all while avoiding a whole book here…

The show was started by Ade and Melissa dancing a Disco routine to "Move on Up" by Destination. It was an excellent way to start the show, with Nigel calling it an "incredible start." Mary said it "picked me up," and it drew high praise from Tyce, who said it was "frickin great."

Kupono and Kayla were up doing a Mia Michaels Contemporary routine. It was danced to "Gravity" by Sara Bareilles and was to depict the "dance" between an addiction and an addict. This was a powerful dance and I felt they did very well. Nigel called it "brilliant" and Mary said they were "stayin on the Hot Tamale train."

A Foxtrot was next performed by Jason and Caitlin. They danced to "Minnie the Moocher" by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. It was a well executed routine. They looked great up there and Nigel compared Caitlin to "Grace Kelly" in the elegant way they danced. Tyce summed it up well, saying they "looked like stars" up there.

With Russian Folk dance, the first one on the show, Phillip and Jeanine took the stage. I had to feel bad for them drawing this routine. They danced to "Kelinka" by Barynya. It was difficult, but looked quite childish and the judges didn't like it, which was not the fault of the dancers. Nigel did call the legwork "fabulous," Mary said it had "bright highlights," and Tyce said they did it "very well."

Next up were Evan and Randi performing a Hip Hop routine. I was a little worried for them, since I never thought they'd do well in this style of dancing. They danced to "Halo" by Beyonce and they actually surprised me. The dance was nice and played to their strengths. Randi was really hitting it. Nigel called them his "favorite couple." Mary said she was "expecting a trainwreck" but they did a "great job." Tyce felt that Evan needed to "find more" and I had to agree here.

Brandon and Janette were next with an Argentine Tango. They danced to "Libertango" from Forever Tango. This was a sexy and hot routine. They received a standing ovation from the judges, something that rarely happens. Nigel gave it the highest praise, saying It was "as close to perfection as I've ever seen in a ballroom" dance. Mary screamed and Tyce called them a "power couple."

After the break (thank goodness for DVR) Ade and Melissa were up with a second routine, dancing a Waltz. They danced to "A Natural Woman" by Mary J. Blige. It was lovely, but not quite what I expected from them. Nigel called it "beautiful" and Tyce said it was "well danced."

With a Broadway routine, Kupono and Kayla took the stage again. They performed to "The Dance at the Gym" from West Side Story. Nigel wasn't thrilled, saying he "needed more" and that there was "no feeling of true emotion. Although the other judges gave them okay reviews, I had to agree with Nigel. Could Kupono have danced his last? We'll see.

Jason and Caitlin came back on stage with a Lyrical Jazz piece, dancing to "Show Me Heaven" by Maria Mckee. I thought it was beautiful and perhaps one of their best dances. Mary had mixed feelings, saying it "wasn't 'magic'" but said there were many "unusual" things in the dance. It was beautiful, but as Tyce said, they need to "take it further."

Up with a Jive were Phillip and Jeanine. I almost groaned. Phillip…a Jive? I was surprised. Dancing to "Stuff Like That There" by Bette Midler, they actually did much better than I thought they would. Nigel said that for Phillip it was the "best you've been out of your own style" and that he was "starting to come to life." Mary found their dance to be a "big surprise" and Tyce said you can dial "1-888-fan friggin tastic." That pretty much said it all.

Evan and Randi had a Samba as their second dance, dancing to "Ritmo De Bom Bom" by Jubaba. I thought Randi did well, but this definitely wasn't their best piece. Nigel said it was "not as hot as I would like" and Mary said it only had a "slow sizzle." Randi did make it on the Hot Tamale train with Mary though.

Performing the last routine of the night, Brandon and Janette hit the stage with a Jazz Routine. They danced to "Ruby Blue" by Roisin Murphy. It was great and they played their characters well. Nigel predicted that this couple would have the "biggest vote of the night" and I'm inclined to agree. They were hot last night. Mary felt that they saved "the best for last" and Tyce said that they "have that thing."

Overall, I do believe this was the best night. The routines were awesome. The competition has definitely been stepped up. I'm predicting that Caitlin is the girl to go, but we'll see. As for the guys, I think will probably be Kupono, but that there is a chance that either Jason or Evan could possibly end up there too. It all depends, and I just can't wait for tonight's show to find out the top 10 dancers.

Make sure you check back tomorrow to find out who gets cut!
